Project Journal September 08 - The Project Begins

View when the project started September 08,  and then the months that follow until the project is completed. Early October08Late October 08, November 08 and now that spring is here, April 09

Sept 1st  Drafted ideas on the strawbale mud hut. Our local code allows 200 sq foot without having a building inspector come out.

Sept 9th Got lumber for 4X4 supporting posts and frame

Sept 10th  Went to landfill and talked to the manager to see if I could get a scrap piece of landfill liner to use for a living/green roof

Sept 12 Got in touch with local officials and found a resource for clay, dirt, urbanite, (crushed concrete) and other needed materials

Sept 14 Created plans for mud hut, 12 X 14  12 wide, 14' deep… then later changed plans for the 14’ to be the width and 12’ to be the depth. These plans were changed in order to have a larger view of the pond.

Sept 18  got a Sonoma truck load of free dirt from city for later use on green roof. Unloaded the dirt into pile.

Sept 20  Talked to local contractor about using “waste subsoil”.  I picked up a Sonoma truck load of free subsoil and started building up the strawbale floor.

Sept 21 Went back to contractor and pleaded for a huge delivery truck if I paid him for gas. He agreed and brought out approx 10+ yards?  About 12 or so of my truckloads. Thank you contractor... he also did it for free....

Sept 23 cut all 2X8X14 treated lumber to frame in box foundation

Sept 24th  Shannon and I dug three post holes down to the frost line set three 4X4 posts. We also sifted through a truck load of free urbanite from the city. Washed the Urbanite and used them to fill in the post holes that were dug below frost line. We used the taped method. The small gravel and dirt that was separated in the separation process was used for building the foundation.

*Sept 27 Leighanne, Michael, Noah, and Jessey,  as well as my nephew Josh dug the final post hole, and since there was no urbanite left, we filled the last post hole with concrete. We started framing in the foundation.

Sept 28 Framed in the final 2 foundation boards, and screwed in some cross supports.

Sept 29 Went to the city and got the second Sonoma truck load of free urbanite.  We sifted, washed, and placed the Urbanite under the frame for structural support
