Project Journal November 2008

Nov 8 Shannon and Leighanne and I put a brown coat on the south east and north left side of the mud hut.

Nov 8-17th Realizing that the mud hut will not get finished due to freezing temps, I tied mini bales to put in between the top plate and the roof line to plug any exposure to the outside wind. The four horizontal windows got temporarily put into place held up only by window clips. The final west side vertical window also got installed and mudded in. (Hopefully the temperatures won't freeze the adobe mix and crack the window.) The mirrors were glued to the inside of the window frame to make the window look larger and more like a garden window.

The west and north west side of the mud hut did not receive a brown coat, only a slip coat for the winter….  :(

Bruce, Izzy, Myself, and Dawn struggled during that week to also get the waterproof membrane over the plywood. The membrane was actually quite heavy and bulky and it took two people on the roof and two people handing it up. We secured it with clamps, and 2X4's but it was no match for the 50 mile an hour winds that occurred in December. Currently the tar paper and the water proof membrane are no longer on the roof, and it is exposed to the elements of winter snow and rain. :(

That’s it for now other than finding a way to cover the triangle at the roof peaks on the north and south side…

till spring…..

Skinny windows, two of them we framed in, two of them we didn't. This glass is 1/4 inch that came out of a broken china cabinet.
Bottles will be used
as decoration and light when cemented into the cob mixture

Waterproof membrane eventually blew off during 50 mile an hour winter wind storm :(
