Project Journal - Second Part of October 2008

View when the project started September 08,  and then the months that follow until the project is completed. Early October08Late October 08, November 08 and now that spring is here, April 09

Izzy and Bruce tying and stacking bales like bricks, staggering the blocks.

Once the Bales were stacked, top plates were applied, and squared up to the frame.

Oct 17th Dawn and I Built 7 trusses from 2X10X12’s and 2X4’s for cross supports

Oct 18th  We installed 5 of the 7 trusses built on the strawbale mud hut J

Oct 19th Bronwinn and I worked on the clay slip, we also cut 2X4 supports to frame in above sliding door.

Oct 20th It rained all day :(

Oct 21st  Bought $250.00 worth of ¾ “ tongue and groove plywood. I went over the budget with the plywood. In all, this project will cost approx. $1,100.00 even though half the material was recycled.

Dawn and I installed the sliding door and trim that holds it in place.

I made a clay slip and applied it to the bales. I also started making sure all the bales were properly tied to each other.

Oct 22 Leighanne, Noah, Michael and Emily, came out and helped make and apply the clay slip needed for the first coat on the outside of the building.  I also tried to level two of the windows and mud around them.

Oct 25 The plywood roof gets put on by Dawn, Dan, Josh, Myself and Brett.

Dawn and Dan nailing on the tongue and grove plywood. We could have went with cheaper material, however I chose tongue and grove in case we chose to apply a living roof. A living roof has a lot more weight to it than a traditional roof would have. .

Handing up the plywood

Oct – Nov 7  Today was spent mudding and patching holes. It was also spent applying the brown coat to the south back side of the mud hut.

Its hard work mixing the cob, but Josh is doing such a great job!

Screening the rocks from the clay mix. Normally you would use a larger screen where you throw a shovel full of dirt onto the screen. The rocks would fall on one side, the dry clay on the other. In this case, the clay was extremely wet and messy, and hand application was the only method of separation.
